How I’ve Remained Eczema-Free for Two Years: Tips for Maintaining Healthy Skin During Eczema Awareness Month

By Amy Varner, Aesthetics Provider since 2014

October 8, 2024

After years of struggling with eczema flare-ups, I’m proud to say that I’ve been eczema-free for two years. In honor of Eczema Awareness Month, I want to share what’s worked for me and how I’ve managed to keep my skin clear, hydrated, and healthy. Eczema can be frustrating, but with a proper routine, you can repair and maintain your skin barrier for lasting relief!

1. Cleanse and Shower with Lukewarm Water

One of the first changes I made was avoiding hot showers. While the warmth may feel soothing, hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, irritated, and inflamed. Instead, I opt for lukewarm water, which is much gentler on the skin. Limiting shower time to 10-15 minutes also helps prevent excessive moisture loss.

2. Repair and Maintain Your Skin Barrier

Your skin’s barrier is its first line of defense. I’ve found success in using products specifically designed to restore and strengthen the skin barrier. Colorescience Barrier Pro Cleanser and Moisturizer have become staples in my routine! These products are medical grade, gentle, free of harsh chemicals, and packed with nourishing ingredients that help keep my skin hydrated and protected from environmental stressors. I make sure to moisturize immediately after showering to lock in moisture.

3. Don’t Over-Exfoliate

Exfoliating can help remove dead skin cells, but over-exfoliating can lead to irritation, especially for those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. I limit exfoliation to once per week, and I always use gentle, non-abrasive exfoliants. Keeping your skin smooth without stripping its protective layer is key to avoiding flare-ups.

4. Stay Hydrated

Drinking adequate water is a crucial part of maintaining healthy skin from the inside out. Dehydration can lead to dry, itchy skin, so I make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. When your body is hydrated, it’s better able to support the skin’s barrier function and retain moisture.

5. Cover Your Skin in Cold Weather

Cold, dry air can be brutal on sensitive skin. During the winter months, I make it a point to cover up exposed areas when going outside. Wearing gloves, scarves, and long sleeves helps protect my skin from the elements and prevent moisture loss caused by the cold. I also keep a travel-sized moisturizer on hand to apply throughout the day when my skin feels dry.

6. Avoid Harsh Active Ingredients in Cold Months

During the colder months, I avoid using harsh active ingredients like retinoids and certain acids that can further dry out or irritate my skin. While these ingredients may be beneficial for some people, I’ve found that my skin needs more nourishment and protection throughout the colder months. Instead, I focus on soothing, hydrating ingredients that help keep my skin calm and balanced.

7. Use a Humidifier

Indoor heating can dry out the air in your home, which in turn dries out your skin. A humidifier has been a game-changer for me, especially during winter. It adds moisture back into the air, helping to maintain skin hydration and prevent that dry, tight feeling that often comes with heated indoor environments.

8. Wear Soft, Breathable Fabrics

I’ve learned to be mindful of the fabrics that come in contact with my skin. Rough, scratchy materials like wool can irritate sensitive skin, so I opt for soft, breathable fabrics like cotton. Wearing loose-fitting clothing also helps minimize friction and prevents unnecessary irritation.

9. Avoid Scented or Harsh Products

Fragranced skincare and body products can be a trigger for eczema. I choose fragrance-free products whenever possible, and I always check labels for any harsh chemicals or preservatives that could irritate my skin. Stick with gentle, dermatologist-recommended products to reduce the risk of flare-ups.

10. Manage Stress

Stress can be a major factor in eczema flare-ups. Incorporating stress management techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises has made a big difference in keeping my eczema under control. Finding ways to relax and unwind is essential for overall health and skin well-being.

Conclusion

Maintaining healthy skin and avoiding eczema flare-ups takes consistency and care, but it’s completely doable with the right approach. By making small adjustments like showering in lukewarm water, using gentle skincare products like Colorescience Barrier Pro, and protecting your skin from the cold, you can help repair and maintain your skin’s barrier. Remember, everyone’s skin is different, so it’s essential to find what works best for you. If you’re struggling with eczema, don’t hesitate to consult one of our providers for a personalized treatment plan!

Here’s to another year of being eczema-free!

Exploring Uncommon Botox Treatments for the Face and Neck

By Amy Varner, Aesthetics Provider since 2014

September 13, 2024

Botox is renowned for its effectiveness in reducing wrinkles and fine lines, primarily around the forehead, eyes, and mouth. However, its applications extend beyond these common areas. For those seeking a refreshed appearance with subtle, yet impactful enhancements, there are several less conventional areas where Botox can be used to achieve impressive results. In this article, we’ll explore some of these uncommon Botox placements for the face and neck.

1. Masseter Muscles

The masseter muscles, located at the sides of the jaw, play a significant role in chewing. Botox injections in this area can help relax the muscles, leading to a slimmer jawline and reduced teeth grinding and clenching. For individuals who experience discomfort or TMJ issues, Botox can offer relief while also contouring the jawline for a more refined appearance.

2. Platysma Bands

The platysma muscles run along the sides of the neck and can become more prominent with age, forming prominent vertical bands. Injecting Botox into these muscles can help smooth out the neck’s appearance, reducing the visibility of these bands and creating a more youthful, smooth neckline.

3. Nasal Muscles

The nasal muscles, particularly around the nostrils, can cause "bunny lines" or wrinkles when smiling or scrunching the nose. Botox can be strategically placed to reduce these lines, offering a smoother appearance and enhancing the overall symmetry of the nose. Additionally, Botox can be used in certain cases to lift and slim the nose. It can also be combined with filler for the perfect liquid nose job.

4. Chin

Many people overlook the chin when considering Botox, but injections here can be highly effective in treating "chin dimpling" or the "orange peel" effect. By relaxing the muscles in this area, Botox can help create a smoother and more even chin contour.

5. Upper Lip

Botox can be used above the upper lip to create a subtle lift, reducing the appearance of fine lines, improving lip symmetry, and reducing gummy smile. This treatment can also enhance the definition of the upper lip, giving the illusion of a fuller, more youthful looking mouth and perioral area.

6. Eyebrow Tail

While Botox is commonly used to lift the brows, focusing on the tail end of the eyebrows can help lift drooping corners and create a more alert and open-eyed appearance. This precise placement can correct asymmetries and give a refined arch to the eyebrows.

7. Temples

Botox in the temple area can alleviate tension headaches and migraines by relaxing the muscles that contribute to these conditions. Additionally, treating this area can help with the overall contour of the face, making it look more balanced and youthful.

Conclusion

Botox offers versatile treatment options beyond the traditional wrinkle areas such as the forehead and eyes. By exploring these less common placements, you can achieve a more comprehensive rejuvenation that addresses unique concerns and enhances your overall appearance. If you’re considering Botox for these unconventional areas, consult with one of our master injectors who can tailor a treatment plan to meet your specific needs and goals.

At Desert Hills Rejuvenation, we offer personalized consultations to explore all your cosmetic options and help you achieve the results you desire. Schedule your appointment today to discover how these innovative Botox treatments can benefit you.

Understanding Cortisol: The Stress Hormone and How to Manage It

By Amy Varner, Aesthetics Provider since 2014

August 28, 2024

Cortisol, often referred to as the "stress hormone," plays a crucial role in your body's response to stress. It's produced by the adrenal glands and helps regulate a wide range of functions, including metabolism, immune response, and even memory formation. However, when cortisol levels are consistently high, it can lead to a variety of health problems, including anxiety, weight gain, sleep disturbances, and even heart disease.

Managing cortisol levels is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being, and balancing hormones. In this article, we'll explore the importance of cortisol, tips for reducing it naturally, and the role of lab work in monitoring cortisol levels.

What is Cortisol and Why Does it Matter?

Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is released in response to stress and low blood-glucose concentration. It's part of the body's fight-or-flight response, providing the energy and focus needed to deal with immediate threats. However, in today’s fast-paced world, many people experience chronic stress, which leads to prolonged elevated cortisol levels. This chronic elevation can disrupt many bodily functions, leading to issues like:

Understanding and managing your cortisol levels is a key aspect of maintaining your health, particularly as you age or experience health concerns.

Tips for Reducing Cortisol Levels

Reducing cortisol levels involves managing stress and making lifestyle changes that promote relaxation and well-being. Here are some effective strategies:

Lab Work to Check Cortisol Levels

Monitoring cortisol levels through lab work is essential, especially for those on HRT or experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance. Here are some common tests used to check cortisol levels. At Desert Hills Rejuvenation, we test cortisol levels with our comprehensive hormone labs.

By regularly checking cortisol levels, you can work with one of our healthcare providers to adjust treatments and lifestyle choices, ensuring optimal hormone balance and overall health.

Conclusion

Cortisol plays a critical role in your health, influencing everything from stress management to immune function. By understanding how to manage cortisol levels through lifestyle changes, regular monitoring, and, if necessary, hormone replacement therapy, you can maintain better overall health and reduce the risks associated with prolonged stress. If you're concerned about your cortisol levels or are undergoing HRT, consult with one of our professionals to ensure your hormone levels are balanced and you're on the right track for long-term well-being.

Tips for Maintaining Muscle Mass While Taking Semaglutide

By Amy Varner, Aesthetics Provider since 2014

August 19, 2024

Semaglutide, one of our popular medications for weight loss, has been a game-changer for many seeking to shed extra pounds. However, one concern that often arises is the potential for muscle loss (or muscle wasting) during significant weight reduction. Maintaining muscle mass is crucial for overall health, metabolism, and a toned appearance. Here are some essential tips to help you preserve and even build muscle while on semaglutide.

1. Prioritize Protein Intake

Protein is the building block of muscle, making it vital to maintain an adequate intake, especially when you’re losing weight. Ensure you’re consuming enough high-quality protein sources, such as lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, and plant-based proteins. Aim for at least 0.75 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight daily, depending on your activity level and fitness goals. Distributing your protein intake evenly throughout the day, particularly around your workout sessions, can optimize muscle synthesis and recovery.

2. Lift Weights Regularly

Resistance training is one of the most effective ways to maintain and build muscle. Incorporate weight lifting into your routine at least 3-4 times per week, focusing on compound movements like squats, deadlifts, bench presses, and rows. These exercises target multiple muscle groups and stimulate muscle growth more effectively than isolation exercises. Progressive overload, where you gradually increase the weight or resistance, is key to continuous muscle development. If you’re new to lifting or need guidance, consider working with our personal trainer to ensure proper form and programming.

3. Incorporate Emsculpt Neo Treatments

Emsculpt Neo is a revolutionary non-invasive treatment that combines high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology with radiofrequency (RF) to build muscle and reduce fat simultaneously. This treatment can be particularly beneficial while on semaglutide, as it helps to preserve and enhance muscle mass even as you lose weight. Emsculpt Neo sessions work by inducing powerful muscle contractions that cannot be achieved through voluntary exercise alone, leading to increased muscle strength and tone. Incorporating Emsculpt Neo into your regimen can complement your efforts in the gym, giving you a leaner, more sculpted physique as you drop pounds with semaglutide treatments.

4. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is often overlooked but is crucial for muscle function and recovery. Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps, decreased strength, and impaired recovery, all of which can hinder your muscle maintenance efforts. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, more if you’re exercising intensely or in a hot climate. Including electrolytes, especially after intense workouts, can also help maintain proper muscle function.

5. Ensure Adequate Rest and Recovery

Rest and recovery are as important as your workouts in maintaining muscle mass. Your muscles need time to repair and grow stronger after each session. Ensure you’re getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night and include rest days in your weekly routine to prevent overtraining. Incorporating stretching, foam rolling, or yoga can also aid in muscle recovery and flexibility.

Conclusion

Maintaining muscle mass while taking semaglutide is entirely achievable with the right approach. By prioritizing protein intake, engaging in regular weight lifting, incorporating Emsculpt Neo treatments, staying hydrated, and allowing for adequate recovery, you can preserve and even enhance your muscle mass as you progress through your weight loss journey. These strategies will not only help you achieve a toned and sculpted physique but also support your overall health and well-being.

Unlocking the Power of Semaglutide Injections for Weight Loss: A Comparative Look at Popular Medications

By Amy Varner, Aesthetics Provider since 2014

August 15, 2024

In the pursuit of weight loss, finding an effective and sustainable solution is often a challenge. Among the various options available, semaglutide injections have emerged as a groundbreaking approach to weight management, showing significant promise in clinical trials and real-world applications. But how does semaglutide stack up against other weight loss medications? In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of semaglutide and compare it to other popular weight loss treatments.

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, originally developed for the management of type 2 diabetes. Recently, it has gained FDA approval for weight loss under the brand names Wegovy® and Ozempic®. Semaglutide works by mimicking the effects of GLP-1, a hormone that regulates appetite and food intake. By enhancing the body’s natural satiety signals, semaglutide helps reduce hunger and caloric intake, making it easier for individuals to lose weight.

The Benefits of Semaglutide for Weight Loss

Comparing Semaglutide to Other Weight Loss Medications

While semaglutide is a promising option, it’s essential to understand how it compares to other commonly used weight loss medications:

Is Semaglutide Right for You?

While semaglutide is a powerful tool for weight loss, it’s essential to consult with one of our healthcare professionals to determine if it’s the right option for you. Laser-Free Permanent Hair Removal: Discover the Benefits of Epilfree

By Sascha Charley, Licensed Esthetician

July 14, 2024

Permanent hair removal is a highly sought-after solution for those tired of the endless cycle of shaving, waxing, and plucking. While laser hair removal has been a popular choice for many, the demand for alternatives has grown over the years. Fortunately, there’s an innovative alternative: Epilfree, a laser-free permanent hair removal system that offers effective results without the drawbacks associated with laser treatments. In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of Epilfree and how it compares to traditional laser hair removal.

What Is Epilfree?

Epilfree is a unique, two-step hair removal system that combines natural ingredients with a special formula to inhibit hair growth. Unlike laser hair removal, which uses concentrated light energy to target hair follicles, Epilfree works by penetrating the hair follicle and disrupting the cell division process that is responsible for hair growth. The result is a gradual reduction in hair density and thickness, leading to permanent hair removal over time.

The Benefits of Epilfree

1. Suitable for all skin and hair types, one of the most significant advantages of Epilfree is its versatility. Laser hair removal typically works best on individuals with fair skin and dark hair, as the laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle. This can make laser less effective or even risky for those with darker skin tones or lighter hair. Epilfree, on the other hand, is effective on all skin tones and hair colors, making it an inclusive option for a broader range of people.

2. No risk of burns or hyperpigmentation with Epilfree. On the other hand, laser hair removal can cause burns, especially on darker skin tones where the laser may inadvertently target the surrounding skin. Additionally, laser treatments can lead to hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) or hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin). Since Epilfree does not use laser technology, there is no risk of these adverse effects, making it a safer option for many individuals.

3. Epilfree is pain-free and comfortable whereas laser hair removal can be uncomfortable. Many people describe the sensation as similar to being snapped with a rubber band. While the pain level varies depending on the individual’s pain tolerance and the area being treated, it’s a concern for many. Epilfree, in contrast, is virtually painless. The treatment involves applying a serum and activator to the skin after waxing, making it a comfortable alternative to laser treatments.

4. No downtime or recovery period is required after Epilfree. After a laser hair removal session, it’s common to experience redness, swelling, and sometimes even blistering, which can require a few days of recovery time. With Epilfree, there is no downtime. You can return to your daily activities immediately after the treatment, with no need to worry about skin irritation or sensitivity.

5. Epilfree is effective on all skin tones whereas laser hair removal is generally not recommended for individuals with darker skin due to the increased risk of burns and pigmentation issues. Epilfree, however, can be safely used on tanned or sun-exposed skin, making it an ideal choice for those who enjoy spending time outdoors or have naturally darker skin.

Comparing Epilfree to Laser Hair Removal

While laser hair removal has been a go-to solution for many, it comes with its own set of limitations and potential risks:

Epilfree offers a viable alternative, addressing many of the concerns associated with laser hair removal:

Conclusion: Is Epilfree Right for You?

Epilfree is an excellent option for those seeking a safe, effective, and comfortable method of permanent hair removal without the drawbacks of laser treatments. Whether you have a skin tone or hair color that isn’t ideal for laser hair removal, or you’re simply looking for a pain-free and convenient solution, Epilfree offers a compelling alternative.

Empower Your Feminine Wellness: Exploring Advanced Rejuvenation Treatments

By Amy Varner, Aesthetics Provider since 2014

June 26, 2024

Feminine wellness is an integral aspect of a woman’s overall health, impacting both physical comfort and self-confidence. As women age or experience life events like childbirth, they may notice changes in their intimate areas that affect their quality of life. Fortunately, advancements in medical aesthetics have led to the development of effective feminine rejuvenation treatments that can restore comfort, enhance appearance, and improve intimate wellness. In this article, we’ll explore three cutting-edge treatments: the O-shot procedure, Morpheus8 skin tightening for labia rejuvenation, and BTL Emsella.

The O-Shot Procedure: Enhancing Intimate Wellness

The O-Shot, or Orgasm Shot, is a revolutionary treatment designed to enhance sexual pleasure and improve vaginal health. It involves injecting platelet-rich plasma (PRP) derived from your own blood into specific areas of the vagina. PRP is rich in growth factors that stimulate tissue regeneration and increase blood flow, leading to heightened sensitivity and improved lubrication.

Benefits of the O-Shot:

Morpheus8 Skin Tightening for Labia Rejuvenation

For women seeking to address concerns related to the appearance of the labia, Morpheus8 offers an innovative and non-surgical solution. This advanced treatment combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to tighten and rejuvenate the skin of the labia, providing both aesthetic and functional benefits.

How Morpheus8 Works: Morpheus8 uses tiny needles to deliver radiofrequency energy deep into the skin, stimulating collagen production and tightening the underlying tissue. This treatment can improve the appearance of sagging or uneven labia, leading to a more youthful and symmetrical look.

Key Benefits of Morpheus8 for Labia Rejuvenation:

BTL Emsella: Strengthening Pelvic Floor Muscles

Pelvic floor health is crucial for a variety of reasons, including urinary incontinence, sexual function, and overall comfort. BTL Emsella is a groundbreaking treatment that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.

What to Expect with BTL Emsella: During a BTL Emsella session, you sit fully clothed on a specialized chair that emits electromagnetic pulses. These pulses trigger thousands of powerful muscle contractions in the pelvic floor, mimicking the effects of Kegel exercises but with far greater intensity.

Benefits of BTL Emsella:

Conclusion: Prioritizing Your Feminine Wellness

Feminine rejuvenation is about more than just appearance—it’s about feeling confident, comfortable, healthy, and empowered in your own body. Whether you’re seeking to enhance sexual wellness with the O-Shot, improve the appearance and firmness of the labia with Morpheus8, or strengthen your pelvic floor with BTL Emsella, these advanced treatments offer effective, non-invasive solutions tailored to your unique needs.

The Ultimate Guide to Skincare: Elevate Your Routine with These Must Haves

By Amy Varner, Aesthetics Provider since 2014

June 12, 2024

When it comes to skincare, achieving a radiant, youthful complexion requires more than just basic cleansing and moisturizing. It’s about a comprehensive approach that includes regular professional treatments, high-quality products, and a consistent at-home regimen. Here’s how you can elevate your skincare game with expert tips and treatments that target skin health and longevity.

The Importance of Regular Facials

Facials aren’t just a luxury—they are a key component of effective skincare. Regular facials help to deeply cleanse the skin, remove impurities, and address specific skin concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, and aging. At our medical spa, facials go beyond the standard offering. We often include advanced techniques like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and LED light therapy, which can significantly improve the texture and tone of your skin.

Why Invest in Regular Facials?

Medical-Grade Skincare: The Gold Standard

When it comes to skincare products, not all are created equal. Medical-grade skincare products are formulated with higher concentrations of active ingredients, which means they penetrate deeper into the skin to deliver noticeable results. These products are often recommended by dermatologists and skincare professionals because they are clinically tested and proven to be effective!

Must Have Ingredients to Consider Adding to Your Regimen:

Proper At-Home Skincare Routine

A good at-home skincare routine is essential to maintaining the results of your professional treatments. Consistency is key—morning and night routines should include cleansing, treating, moisturizing, and protecting your skin. Maintaining a consistent at home regimen amplifies the results of your in-office treatments.

Steps for an Effective Routine:

Special Treatments: Collagen Induction Therapy

As we age, our skin’s collagen production decreases, leading to sagging, fine lines, and wrinkles. Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), includes revolutionary treatments that stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. These minimally invasive procedures involves creating micro-injuries in the skin, triggering the skin’s repair process and resulting in firmer, smoother skin.

Benefits of Collagen Induction Therapy:

Quality Facial Treatments: Investing in Your Skin’s Future

At our medical spa, facial treatments are designed to do more than just pamper—they provide significant long-term benefits. Treatments like Hydrafacials, chemical peels, and Morpheus8 therapies are tailored to your skin’s needs, offering results that go far beyond what you can achieve at home.

Hydrafacial: This popular treatment deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates the skin using a patented Vortex-Fusion technology, leaving your skin glowing and revitalized.

Chemical Peels: By removing the outer layer of dead skin cells, chemical peels can improve the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation.

Morpheus8 Skin Tightening and Resurfacing: This treatment uses targeted Radio Frequency energy and microneedles to address wrinkles, sagging skin, sun damage, and other skin imperfections, revealing smoother, younger-looking skin.

Conclusion: Your Path to Radiant Skin

Achieving and maintaining beautiful skin requires a balanced approach that includes professional treatments, medical-grade skincare products, and a diligent at-home routine. By investing in regular facials, using high-quality products like retinol, antioxidants, and peptides, and exploring advanced treatments like Collagen Induction Therapy, you can ensure your skin stays healthy, radiant, and youthful for years to come.
